How To Remove Gravy Stains

There is no denying that a Sunday roast would be incomplete without gravy. It’s delicious and adds flavour to the beef and potatoes! However, sometimes gravy ends up on your clothes accidentally as you are eating your tasty dinner. Due to its oily base, it can be a tricky stain to remove but don’t worry – in this blog, we’ll guide you on how to remove gravy stains!

how to remove gravy stains

Step 1 – Act Fast

The trick to removing gravy stains is to act fast. Gravy is composed of a mixture of grease and protein so if you don’t treat the stain immediately, it will stick to your clothes and be even harder to remove. And let’s face it, gravy looks way better on the plate than it does on clothes!

Step 2 – Scrape Away The Gravy

Once you’ve seen the gravy stains on your clothes, get a butter knife and try to scrape off the excess gravy from the fabric.

Step 3 – Apply a Stain Remover or Laundry Detergent

Then, get either a stain remover or laundry detergent and apply it to the stained area to remove gravy stains. Try not to pour too much otherwise it may ruin the fabric of your garment. When you’ve poured the stain remover or laundry detergent, wait 15 minutes before moving on to step number 4.

Step 4 – Wash In Hot Water

Put your garment in the washing machine and wash it in hot water (that is suited for the fabric) using laundry detergent and colour-safe bleach.

It’s essential you thoroughly check your garment after the wash cycle has finished to see if the gravy stains are still there. If they are there, we strongly advise AGAINST putting your garment in the tumble dryer because the high heat will make the stain nearly impossible to remove.

If you are happy with the results, either air-dry the garment or put it in the tumble dryer.

The proof is in the pudding – follow these steps to remove gravy stains and you’ll start 2023 with no stains on your favourite clothes!

A friendly reminder that Laundryheap is available to help you should you come across any stubborn stains!

Visiting Dublin On A Budget

Whether you’re moving to Dublin or travelling with family, there is no doubt it’s a great city with its lively streets, Guinness and historic buildings. However, the city can be quite pricey but luckily, visiting Dublin on a budget is possible. Here are our tips to travel to Dublin without breaking the bank.

Visiting Dublin on a budget - ha'penny bridge

When Is The Best Time To Visit?

Visiting Dublin on a budget requires careful planning and preparation. This means that you need to look at the best time to visit Dublin. Typically, November, December and January are seen as the cheapest times to visit.

Furthermore, we also recommend booking on a Tuesday as that is the cheapest day to book.

Accommodation

Ideally, you should book your accommodation weeks or even months in advance to get the best deals.

Booking Airbnbs are also a good way to stay on a budget and at times, they are cheaper than a hotel room.

If you are staying in an Airbnb and you found that your laundry is piling up, just get in touch with us and we’ll pick up your laundry and return it back to you within 24 hours!

Using Transport

If you are keen to experience transport in Dublin, it’s important to remember that buses only accept cash and although they don’t give change, they are still cheap to use. The buses are a great option to use when travelling to the city centre from the airport.

We do advise you to get a Dublin pass that allows you to see 30 destinations and also gives you the chance to go on the hop-on, hop-off bus.

You also have the option of using LUAS, a tram system, that operates on two lines.

The good news is that when you’re in the city centre, you can get to the main places just by walking so using the transport system isn’t essential.

Explore The Cheap Attractions

It may sound hard to believe but there are free attractions to visit in Dublin. One of these is the national gallery. If you’re into art, we highly recommend this place which includes the works of Rembrandt, Money and Goya.

Attractions like Dublin Castle and St. Patricks don’t cost much just to look at them from the outside and take those amazing instagrammable photos!

Also, you should visit the national museum of Ireland if you’re interested in learning more about the culture and history.

Stay On A Budget When Visiting Pubs

It’s tempting, we know. Going to Dublin for the drinking culture is a must for many but it is also expensive. While you should visit the famous Temple Bar for the experience, we also recommend visiting other local pubs that are cheaper. Some pubs and bars price their pints for less than 4 EUR which is affordable!

Dublin is a trip that will give you many memories. Visiting Dublin on a budget is important but having fun and enjoying the trip with friends and family is also important!

A friendly reminder that we do offer laundry services in Dublin! If you need a hand in your laundry, just book a service with us!

How to wash a bath mat

When it comes to doing laundry it’s important not to forget the household items that need to be regularly cleaned. This is how to wash your bath mat.

  • Why wash your bath mat?
  • How often should you wash your mat?
  • Using the washing machine
  • Hand washing
  • Leave it to the experts

Why wash your bath mat?

Bathrooms are the perfect environment for mold and bacteria. They are damp and humid, providing a ripe environment for mold to grow on every surface, including your bath mat. In addition to mold, bath mats can become slippy with oil buildup from spilled shower products. Regularly washing your bath mat will prevent these hazards.

How often should you wash your mat?

Washing your bath mat largely depends on how many people use your bathroom and how often. This being said, as a rule of thumb, it is best to wash your bath mat at least once a week to prevent a build-up of bacteria and oil.

Using the washing machine

The easiest way to wash your bath mat is by putting it in the washing machine. That being said, it is best to check the care label as it may be hand wash only.

After checking your bath mats care label, take it outside and give it a good shake to remove any loose dirt. Shaking your mat out will also allow you to better see if there are any stains on your mat that need to be pre-treated.

Once you have shaken out your mat, pre-treat any stains that you can see. You can use a standard stain remover or a natural stain remover, such as hydrogen peroxide.

Next, put your bath mat in the washing machine as normal. It’s best to use a warm setting for your wash as you want to successfully get rid of any lingering bacteria. It is also best to wash your mat on its own as this will ensure it has optimal space in your washing machine and will guarantee a successful clean.

When your wash is complete, dry your mat completely before putting it back in your bathroom. The best way to dry your mat is in the fresh air, however, if the weather does not permit this, you can use a low setting on your tumble dryer, or use a drying rack. If you are using a drying rack, make sure that there is ample ventilation to prevent musty smells and damp.

Hand washing

If you would prefer to not use your washing machine you can hand wash

Similarly to when using the washing machine, before you begin hand washing your mat shake it out to remove any loose dirt.

To hand-wash your bath mat you will need to prepare a diluted bleach solution. It is best to do this in a bath or shallow sink so that you have plenty of room. Before preparing your bleach solution make sure that you are wearing gloves to protect your hands from coming into direct contact with the bleach. You must also ensure that your room is well ventilated to prevent the toxic fumes from the bleach causing you any harm.

Begin preparing your bleach solution by adding one gallon of cold water to your bath or sink. For every one gallon of cold water that you add you can add one teaspoon of bleach. Depending on how long it has been since your bath mats last clean depends on how much bleach you decide to use.

Once the diluted bleach solution has been made, place your bath mat in the solution and leave it to soak for three to four hours.

After three to four hours, remove your bath mat and leave it to dry under the same instructions as when using a washing machine.

Finally, drain and rinse the bath/sink and clean away the dirt left behind from your bath mat.

Leave it to the experts

If your bath mat is proving particularly difficult to clean, or you just don’t want to clean it yourself, leave it to us. We will pick up, professionally dry clean, and re-deliver your bath mat to you all within 24 hours. To book your dry cleaning service head to the Laundryheap website or download the free Laundryheap app.

Laundry tips for sensitive skin

When you have sensitive skin, laundry can become ten times harder. Here are ten top laundry tips that will protect your sensitive skin.

  • Use hypoallergenic products
  • Try liquid detergent
  • Clean your appliance
  • Use fabric softener
  • Separate your clothing
  • Follow the instructions
  • Wash new clothes
  • Hot wash your sheets
  • Rinse your washing
  • Wear gloves

Use hypoallergenic products

Many laundry detergents use bleaches, dyes, and fragrances to make their products more effective. If you have sensitive skin, avoid these detergents as they can cause irritation. Instead, look for products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin. Alternatively, try making your own laundry detergent.

Try liquid detergent

There isn’t a lot of difference between liquid detergent and powder detergent, however, when it comes to sensitive skin you should always try and buy a liquid detergent. Powder detergents will often leave a soapy residue on your clothing. If not removed, this residue can cause irritation when you wear your freshly washed clothes. Liquid detergent can also leave a residue, however, due to its liquid consistency, does not leave as much, therefore lessening the irritation caused.

Clean your appliance

Whether you have sensitive skin or not it is vital to clean out your washing machine after every two to three washes. The detergent draw of your washing machine can easily become clogged with excess laundry detergent that clumps together if not removed. This can encourage mould to grow in the draw. If you suffer with sensitive skin this mould can cause and insufferable amount of irritation.

Use fabric softener

Fabric softener works by smoothing the fibres that make up your clothes and making them soft to touch. If you have sensitive skin, specifically eczema, keeping your clothes soft will stop harsher materials from rubbing your skin and causing irritation. When buying a fabric softener, make sure that it is specifically designed for sensitive skin as some softeners can cause irritation by being overly fragrant.

Separate your clothing

When you wash your clothing it’s important to separate your clothes by their material. If you wash delicate fabrics, such as silk, with harsher fabrics, such as denim, the harsh fabric can damage the fibres of the more delicate material and make the clothing more abrasive. This can lead to your clothing causing irritation on your next wear. To avoid this, wash all of your delicate fabrics in one load and your harsher fabrics in another.

Follow the instructions

It’s easy to over-pour your detergent, but when you have sensitive skin it’s best to be more cautious with how much you use. If too much detergent is used it can linger on your clothing and cause irritation. This can also happen when you over-fill your washing machine. To avoid this, try and use the correct amount of detergent and not over-fill your washing machine.

Wash new clothes

After buying new clothes it’s always best to give them a wash before wearing them. Many stores will use starch or dyes on their clothing to make them last longer on the shop floor. These chemicals can cause irritation if not washed away. Before wearing any new item, put it on a quick wash just to ensure that your skin stays irritant-free.

Hot wash your sheets

Dust mites and allergens can cause a great amount of skin irritation, especially when the pollen count is high during the summer months. Avoid being surrounded by these irritants whilst sleeping by hot washing your bed sheets. The heat from the wash will kill any lingering allergens and leave you free to enjoy a dreamy sleep.

Rinse your machine

Regardless of whether you use liquid or powder laundry detergent, there will always be residue left over after a wash. To avoid this residing detergent from causing any irritation to your skin, put your machine on a rinse cycle before beginning your laundry. This will wash away any remaining detergent and leave you with a clean washing machine to wash your clothes in.

Wear gloves

If you are hand washing your clothing you may want to wear a pair of gloves. Firstly, the gloves will protect your hands from being consistently exposed to your detergent, and therefore protect them from the risk of being irritated. Secondly, leaving your hands in water for a consistent amount of time will dry them out, which can lead to cracks and irritation. Wearing a pair of gloves will protect your hands from the water, therefore leaving them free from any potential irritation.

The best way to prevent your skin from becoming irritated when doing your laundry is by using a professional dry cleaning service. Book your Laundryheap dry cleaning slot by visiting the Laundryheap website or by downloading the free Laundryheap app.

Summer skincare tips

It’s important to look after your skin throughout the year, but during the summer there are many added skin-damaging risks to be aware of. Try these 10 summer skincare tips that will protect your skin and leave you care free to have fun in the sun.

  • Lighten your skincare
  • Exfoliate
  • Try a combination moisturiser
  • Cut down on showers
  • Stay hydrated
  • SPF is your best friend
  • Don’t forget your lips
  • Your hands need protecting
  • Stay in the shade
  • Treat burns quickly

Lighten your skincare

The heat and humidity that comes with the summer season means that your usual skincare products could cause more harm than good. If you regularly use oil-based cleansers and heavy creams in your skincare routine, you could run the risk of trapping sweat and making skin oily, leading to acne breakouts. To avoid this, try a foaming cleanser. Foaming cleansers are lighter on the skin, and will still remove excess oil from the face, leaving your skin looking refreshed and acne-free.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and helps hydrate your skin. It’s important to exfoliate year-round, however, in the summer months, exfoliating should occur more frequently because your skin needs to be kept as clear of excess sweat as possible to avoid the risk of acne breakouts. Once a week, use a high-quality exfoliator to strip away dead skin cells and remove any sweat that has been deep-rooted into the skin. This will leave your face looking fresh and feeling clean.

Try a combination moisturiser

It is incredibly important to remember to moisturise during the summer. Despite the fact that you may find yourself sweating more during the summer months, that is not a reason to stop providing your skin with hydration. Try using a light-weight combination moisturiser that has an SPF of 30 or more. This will both protect your skin from becoming damaged from the sun and be light enough to prevent acne breakouts from oily skin.

Cut down on showers

In the height of summer, you may find yourself having 2 showers a day in an attempt to cool yourself down. Despite the cooling effects of a shower, over showering causes dehydrated skin, which can lead to skin inflammation and even summer eczema. If you do find yourself needing to shower more often, keep them to a maximum length of 5 minutes and never shower in hot water. Additionally, when you get out of the shower, moisturise your skin to re-hydrate it.

Stay hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the year, but in summer your skin can become especially dry due to increased exposure to sunlight. Drinking water will keep your skin, and your body, hydrated, whilst aiding in the recovery of damaged skin cells. Aim to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water every day to stay proficiently hydrated.

SPF is your best friend

If you know that you will be out in the sun make sure that you have plenty of sun cream available. Your sun cream needs to be amply applied to every bit of skin that is exposed to the sun, including ears, toes, and nose. Don’t forget that the SPF of your sun cream dictates how often it needs to be applied, for example, SPF 30 needs to be applied every 30 minutes. The sun can cause lasting damage to your skin, so make sure that you take sun cream with you EVERYWHERE during the summer season.

Don’t forget your lips

Dry lips can occur during any season, however, the heat of summer can be especially cruel to your lips. If you don’t stay appropriately hydrated during the summer your lips can become dry, cracked, and even sunburnt. To protect your lips, invest in a rich lip balm with an SPF of 15 plus. This will ensure that your lips remain hydrated and protected from the sun.

Your hands need protecting

It may sound strange, but you need to protect your hands during the summer. The skin on your hands is particularly thin, so if they are exposed to the sun without any protection they will be easily burnt. Find a hand cream that contains an SPF of 30 plus. This will leave your hands silky smooth and prevent them from becoming burnt.

Photo by Shiny Diamond from Pexels

Stay in the shade

When it comes to summer it can be tempting to run straight into the sun and stay there until it goes away. Doing so can lead to lasting skin damage that can be fatal. The best way to protect your skin from the sun is to stay in the shade as much as possible. If you are going to be lying out in the sun, sit under an umbrella so only minimum parts of your skin are directly exposed to the sun. Invest in a wide-brimmed sunhat and sunglasses with high UV protection, and don’t forget to update your sun cream depending on it’s SPF. If you are looking to get a natural tan during the summer, don’t forget to take regular sun breaks and sit in complete shade for 15 minutes. This will prevent your skin from overheating and limit the potential of your skin burning.

Treat burns quickly

If you do get sunburnt it is integral that you treat your burn as quickly as possible. As soon as you realise that you are burnt immediately remove yourself from the sun and apply a layer of aloe vera to the burnt area. Aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory and will help soothe the burn. For the duration of your sunburn, avoid going into direct sunlight, stay hydrated and continuously layer on aloe vera, making sure that you are only applying a thin layer to prevent suffocating the skin.

Hacks for folding clothes

Sometimes the worst part of doing laundry is having to fold and put away your clean clothes. Try these handy hacks for folding clothes to make your laundry easier.

  • T-shirt
  • Jumper
  • Dress shirt
  • Trousers
  • Socks

T-shirt

If you are someone who folds their T-shirts and stacks them in a draw, one on top of the other, then this folding hack will be a game-changer. Folding your T-shirts to stack on top of one another may be fast and easy, but your neat pile will soon become a mess once you realise the T-shirt you want is right at the bottom. To avoid this mess, fold your T-shirts so that they can be placed in an upright position and neatly stacked behind one another. This way all your T-shirts can easily be seen and picked up without causing a mess.

How to fold your T-shirt

  1. Begin by folding one side of the T-shirt, lengthwise, towards the middle of the T-shirt so that it’s roughly level with the neckline.
  2. Fold the sleeve of the side you have folded back over the folded fabric.
  3. Take the non-folded side of the T-shirt and fold it over the folded third of your T-shirt.
  4. Fold your remaining sleeve back over the folded fabric.
  5. Take your T-shirt and fold it in half, leaving the bottom of your T-shirt showing.
  6. Finally, fold your T-shirt into a third, making a rectangle shape that will stand up on its own.

Jumper

Now that we have welcomed summer, it’s time to fold away our winter jumpers to make room for lighter materials. To ensure that your jumpers will be wearable next winter, it’s best to store them safely and appropriately. This includes being careful of the way that you fold them.

How to fold a jumper

  1. Begin by folding the arms of your jumper inwards, across the jumper and parallel to the hem.
  2. Take one side of the jumper and fold it inwards towards the middle, repeating the process with the other side.
  3. Take the bottom of your jumper and fold it in half upwards, turning your jumper into a neat square shape that can easily be packed away until next winter.

Dress shirt

It’s always best to hang your dress shirts up to avoid creases. That being said, if you are packing a dress shirt to travel or you want to make space in your wardrobe for clothing you wear more often than it’s always best to fold your dress shirts in a way that will minimise creasing.

How to fold a dress shirt

  1. Fold one side of your shirt inwards towards the centre.
  2. Take the sleeve of the folded side of the shirt and fold them back over the fold, folding them again so that they are half their length.
  3. Repeat steps one and two on the other side of your shirt.
  4. Once both sides of your shirt have been folded inwards, take the bottom of your shirt and fold it in half lengthwise. This should make a rectangle that will be easy to store away.

Trousers

Similarly to dress shirts, trousers should be hung up in your wardrobe to avoid them taking up space in your drawers. That being said, if you prefer your trousers to be stored away in a draw, or if you are packing trousers to travel, there is a very easy way to fold them.

How to fold trousers

  1. Fold your trousers in half by placing one leg on top of the other and matching up both sides of the waistband.
  2. Next, fold your trousers in half lengthwise by bringing the hem of your trousers up to just under your trousers’ waistband- this should create a long rectangle shape.
  3. To create a smaller shape, fold your trousers in half, lengthwise, again.

Socks

It’s very easy to lose your socks or get pairs of socks mixed up. To avoid odd socks, it’s always best to fold them.

How to fold socks

  1. Lay one sock flat on top of the other, making sure that the toes and heels are matched up.
  2. Fold the toes of the socks upwards, stopping just shy of the elasticated top of your socks.
  3. Finish by folding your socks in half again so that they can just about stand on their own.

How to rid your clothing of pet hair

We all love our pets, but what we don’t love is their hair covering our clothing. Getting rid of pet hair is not as simple as putting your clothing in the washing machine. If you were to do that, the hair would clump together and clog your washing machines drainage pipe. This could result in your washing machine breaking.

Rather than risk breaking your washing machine, here are some pre-treatment methods to rid your clothing of pet hair.

  • A lint roller
  • Sticky tape
  • Rubber gloves
  • A sponge
  • Tumble dryer

A lint roller

A lint roller is one-sided adhesive paper wrapped around a barrel with a handle attached for easy use. They are incredibly handy when it comes to removing pet hair. Simply roll it over your hairy item of clothing and observe as the adhesive paper picks up the pet hair. If you notice the paper becoming clogged with pet hair, simply remove the top layer of adhesive paper and there will be another layer ready to use underneath.

Sticky tape

If you don’t have a lint roller available, sticky tape can be just as effective. Simply tear off a strip of tape and lay it over your item of clothing. As you pull the tape from your clothing the pet hairs will come away with it. Repeat this process all over your garment until it is pet hair-free. Depending on the size of your clothing, and how hairy it is, you may need several strips of tape to complete the dehairing process.

Image by Marco Verch Professional Photographer and Speaker

Rubber gloves

An ordinary pair of rubber gloves are handy for washing the dishes and removing pet hair. Begin by laying your garment on a flat surface. Next, put on your rubber gloves and rub your clothing item. The movement will create friction between the fabric and the gloves, resulting in the pet hairs becoming loose and forming piles. These piles of hair are a lot easier to pick up and dispose of. Once the bigger clumps of pet hair have been disposed of, slightly wet your rubber gloves and repeat the process of rubbing your garment. This will pick up any stray hairs left on your clothes.

A sponge

If you are looking for a way to remove pet hairs without getting your clothes wet, use an ordinary kitchen sponge. Firstly, make sure that your sponge is completely clean and dry. Next, lay your clothing on a flat surface. Take your sponge and slowly rub it over the surface of your item. Your pet hairs will stick to the sponge and your clothing will remain dry. This method is best for quickly removing small amounts of pet hair, however, is not as effective if your clothing is completely covered in hair.

Tumble dryer

Using a tumble dryer is the best way to remove pet hair from multiple items of clothing. Put your items in the dryer and use a 10 minute, no heat, dryer cycle. This will soften the fibres in your clothing and loosen the pet hairs. Unlike a washing machine, your tumble dryer comes with a lint trap that will catch the pet hairs and prevent damage to your machine. Once the cycle has been completed, remove each item of clothing and give it a shake to remove stray hairs. If your clothes need washed, put them in the washing machine and add ½ a cup of white vinegar to the cycle to keep the clothes loose and remove deep-set pet hairs.

Hay fever season tips

Hay fever season is in full force. Usually in it’s peak from mid-March to September, hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen that can affect your eyes, nose, mouth, and throat. Despite the fact that there is no cure for hay fever, here are some top tips on how to alleviate your symptoms.

  • Buy anti-allergy bedding
  • Wash your bedding often
  • Dry your bedding inside
  • Shut your doors and windows
  • Keep pets out of your bedroom
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Shower before bed

Buy anti-allergen bedding

If you suffer from hay fever it’s best to invest in anti-allergen bedding. Anti-allergen bedding can work in two ways depending on what type of bedding you buy. Firstly, it can work to trap dust and pollen within your bedding so that it can’t be dispersed and irritate your allergens. Alternatively, natural materials repel dust and pollen so that they can’t become trapped in your bedding. If you have found yourself in the past having a particularly difficult time sleeping due to hay fever symptoms, anti-allergen bedding is the first step to having a peaceful night’s sleep.

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

Wash your bedding often

Bedding should be washed every 1-2 weeks, but if you suffer from hay fever you must make sure to wash it every week. It is very easy for pollen and dust to become trapped in your bedding and, if not washed every week, it can build up. This could cause more severe hay fever symptoms and a loss of sleep. For the best results, wash your bedding at 60 degrees and wait until it is completely dry to put back on your bed.

Image by Thanks for your Like • donations welcome from Pixabay

Dry your bedding inside

It is encouraged to dry your laundry outside whenever possible, however, if you have hay fever NEVER dry your bedding outside. It is incredibly easy for pollen to stick to your laundry, so drying your bedding outside will lead to an increase of pollen in your bedding. This can lead to increased hay fever symptoms and loss of sleep. To avoid this, dry your bedding either using a tumble dryer or by hanging over a drying rack.

Shut your doors and windows

During the summer it’s always nice to open your windows and let the fresh air circulate your home. If you are a hay fever sufferer this could lead to more harm than good. Pollen showers can happen at any time, however, the pollen count is always the highest first thing in the morning, and as the temperature begins to drop at night. If your windows are open during these times it can lead to a rush of pollen entering your home and irritating your hay fever symptoms.

Keep pets out of your bedroom

If you have pets try and avoid having them in your bedroom. Pets, such as dogs and cats, carry pollen in their fur from being outside and rolling around in the grass. If you allow your pet into your bedroom, and specifically onto your bed, they can transfer pollen onto your bedding, leaving you to suffer with hay fever symptoms throughout the night. To avoid this, take every precaution to keep your room clear of pollen, including keeping your pets out.

Drink plenty of water

Congestion and sinus pressure are two common hay fever symptoms. There are a number of ways that you can clear your sinuses, but the easiest is to stay hydrated. Drinking 8 glasses of water every day will keep your body hydrated, clear your sinuses, and reduce the production of histamine in your system.

Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

Shower before bed

It’s important to rid yourself of any pollen residue before getting into bed at night. The easiest way to do so is by having a shower. Spending time outdoors will leave pollen residing on your skin and in your hair so before going to bed its best to thoroughly wash your hair and body to remove all of the pollen. In addition to this, if your hay fever causes you to have blocked sinuses and difficulty breathing, the steam from a shower can help clear any mucus and unblock your sinuses for a clearer night’s sleep.

Throughout hay fever season make sure that you are consistently washing your bedding and clothing. Book your Laundryheap dry cleaning slot now by visiting the Laundryheap website or by downloading the free Laundryheap app. Now available in Kuwait, NYC and Bahrain
