Pack smartly

The most important thing to remember is to pack light and pack materials that are easy to wash. There are several ways to do laundry in Southeast Asia, from using a launderettes to washing your clothes in the sink, regardless of the method you decide to use you don’t want to spend an extended period of time, or money, doing it. In addition, it’s best to pack clothes that are durable and easy to wash, such as cotton

Travel with mini laundry detergents

There are several launderettes across Southeast Asia that you can use. To make your laundry experience quick and easy, travel with mini laundry detergents. They are pre-measured for one or two washes, and will prevent you from having to carry, or buy, a full-sized detergent that you will not use.

Don’t forget a laundry bag

Laundry bags are handy to take wherever you travel to. As soon as an item of your clothing is dirty, simply put it in your laundry bag so that you can differentiate between your clean and dirty clothes. As soon as your laundry bag is full, or you are running low on clean clothes, you can decide how best to clean them. In addition, if your clothing is still wet or damp, but you need to pack them away, putting your clothes in your laundry bag will prevent the smell of damp clothing spreading to your other packed belongings.

Never use hotels

If you are staying in a hotel whilst travelling around Southeast Asia there will more than likely be a laundry service provided. Do not use it. Hotel laundry services will usually charge per item of clothing that needs to be laundered rather than by weight. This can result in an extortionate laundry bill by the time you have washed all of your clothes. It may be convenient to use the hotels services, but, if you are looking to save some money, its best to look around for local launderettes or alternative ways to wash your clothes.

Bring a makeshift clothes line

Unless you know that there are tumble dryers available where you are planning to wash your clothes, it’s always best to pack a makeshift clothes line. Your clothesline can be something as simple as some strong rope, as long as you have something that you can hang your clothes on to dry. Some laundrettes will have clothes lines available for you to use, however, this is not a guarantee so it’s always better to bring your own.

Dry your clothes inside

Southeast Asia is known for its warm and sunny climate, however, it is also extremely humid. If you are planning on hanging your clothes out to dry, it’s best to do so indoors rather than outside. The humidity from the air will slow down the drying process, making it more time efficient to simply hang your clothing in your hostel/hotel room.

Carry plenty of coins

There is no shortage of coin-operated laundrettes in Southeast Asia, but you have to make sure that you have the coins to use them. There is nothing worse than turning up to a laundrettes, filling a machine with your washing, only to find out that you don’t have enough coins to operate the machine. To save yourself the hassle, make sure that you have plenty of coins with you to get your washing done.

Plan your laundry time

If you are going to do laundry whilst in Southeast Asia it’s best to plan your time effectively. There are a lot of things you need to consider, such as drying times, pick-up times, and when laundrettes are opened. Plan your method of laundry prior to going on your travels and it will help you manage your laundry time much more efficiently.

The bag method

This is a slightly unusual method for doing laundry, but is a handy alternative if you do not have access to a laundrette.

For the bag method you will need a vinyl bag, water, and laundry detergent.

Begin by filling your vinyl bag until it is half filled and put your clothes in it. Next, add in your detergent and let your clothes soak for a few minutes. After a few minute, use a plunging motion to rotate your clothing. Once you are satisfied with the cleanliness of your clothing, take each item out and rinse off the detergent with water.

Laundry tips for sensitive skin

When you have sensitive skin, laundry can become ten times harder. Here are ten top laundry tips that will protect your sensitive skin.

  • Use hypoallergenic products
  • Try liquid detergent
  • Clean your appliance
  • Use fabric softener
  • Separate your clothing
  • Follow the instructions
  • Wash new clothes
  • Hot wash your sheets
  • Rinse your washing
  • Wear gloves

Use hypoallergenic products

Many laundry detergents use bleaches, dyes, and fragrances to make their products more effective. If you have sensitive skin, avoid these detergents as they can cause irritation. Instead, look for products that are specifically designed for sensitive skin. Alternatively, try making your own laundry detergent.

Try liquid detergent

There isn’t a lot of difference between liquid detergent and powder detergent, however, when it comes to sensitive skin you should always try and buy a liquid detergent. Powder detergents will often leave a soapy residue on your clothing. If not removed, this residue can cause irritation when you wear your freshly washed clothes. Liquid detergent can also leave a residue, however, due to its liquid consistency, does not leave as much, therefore lessening the irritation caused.

Clean your appliance

Whether you have sensitive skin or not it is vital to clean out your washing machine after every two to three washes. The detergent draw of your washing machine can easily become clogged with excess laundry detergent that clumps together if not removed. This can encourage mould to grow in the draw. If you suffer with sensitive skin this mould can cause and insufferable amount of irritation.

Use fabric softener

Fabric softener works by smoothing the fibres that make up your clothes and making them soft to touch. If you have sensitive skin, specifically eczema, keeping your clothes soft will stop harsher materials from rubbing your skin and causing irritation. When buying a fabric softener, make sure that it is specifically designed for sensitive skin as some softeners can cause irritation by being overly fragrant.

Separate your clothing

When you wash your clothing it’s important to separate your clothes by their material. If you wash delicate fabrics, such as silk, with harsher fabrics, such as denim, the harsh fabric can damage the fibres of the more delicate material and make the clothing more abrasive. This can lead to your clothing causing irritation on your next wear. To avoid this, wash all of your delicate fabrics in one load and your harsher fabrics in another.

Follow the instructions

It’s easy to over-pour your detergent, but when you have sensitive skin it’s best to be more cautious with how much you use. If too much detergent is used it can linger on your clothing and cause irritation. This can also happen when you over-fill your washing machine. To avoid this, try and use the correct amount of detergent and not over-fill your washing machine.

Wash new clothes

After buying new clothes it’s always best to give them a wash before wearing them. Many stores will use starch or dyes on their clothing to make them last longer on the shop floor. These chemicals can cause irritation if not washed away. Before wearing any new item, put it on a quick wash just to ensure that your skin stays irritant-free.

Hot wash your sheets

Dust mites and allergens can cause a great amount of skin irritation, especially when the pollen count is high during the summer months. Avoid being surrounded by these irritants whilst sleeping by hot washing your bed sheets. The heat from the wash will kill any lingering allergens and leave you free to enjoy a dreamy sleep.

Rinse your machine

Regardless of whether you use liquid or powder laundry detergent, there will always be residue left over after a wash. To avoid this residing detergent from causing any irritation to your skin, put your machine on a rinse cycle before beginning your laundry. This will wash away any remaining detergent and leave you with a clean washing machine to wash your clothes in.

Wear gloves

If you are hand washing your clothing you may want to wear a pair of gloves. Firstly, the gloves will protect your hands from being consistently exposed to your detergent, and therefore protect them from the risk of being irritated. Secondly, leaving your hands in water for a consistent amount of time will dry them out, which can lead to cracks and irritation. Wearing a pair of gloves will protect your hands from the water, therefore leaving them free from any potential irritation.

The best way to prevent your skin from becoming irritated when doing your laundry is by using a professional dry cleaning service. Book your Laundryheap dry cleaning slot by visiting the Laundryheap website or by downloading the free Laundryheap app.

COMMON LAUNDRY PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

With laundry being the most boring chore, there’s nothing worse than having to deal with mishaps. It’s annoying to see your favourite white shirts turn pink, or your most fitted pair of jeans shrink. Irrespective of how embarrassing these problems are, we’ve all been there.

Keep reading for our guide to your laundry problems and solutions.

  • DISCOLOURATION: Experiencing discolouration is sometimes a result of the washing machine not being set up properly. It is advisable to read the manual in order to understand the specs of the machine to avoid surprises. Another factor is the wrong choice of washing detergent or not washing your clothes with the required amount of detergent. To avoid white turning grey or yellowish, you should soak your whites immediately once you take them out especially if you happen to notice any discolouration on areas such as the armpit, or neck. Wash if possible. That way your white stays whiter.

  • DETERGENT RESIDUE ON CLOTHES: Overloading your washing machine is one of the most common factors to this problem because it restricts the water from circulating well enough on your clothes. It’s advisable to re-wash and rinse your clothes before drying if you notice any form of detergent on your clothing. Don’t just over-look detergent residue on clothes because it can result in a skin reaction. But if you’re not overloading your machine yet experiencing such problems, that might be an indicator of some malfunction in your washing machine. Hence you should have it checked and fixed.

  • WRINKLED CLOTHES: Ensure the washing machine is set to the appropriate cycle otherwise it can generate excessive heat and water hence resulting in wrinkles on clothing. Often times, it is almost impossible to avoid this problem but there are a couple of less time-consuming yet efficient ways to avoid such inconveniences especially with fabrics such as polyester, nylon, wool etc. Sorting is one of the most efficient ways to avoid this problem especially when you take out your clothes from the dryer. Avoid piling your clothes. Rather put them away. That way it’ll save you ironing time.

  • GREASE STAINED: Some stains can be really stubborn and don’t come off easily. In order to avoid putting your machine through a long cycle as well as putting pressure on the other items, it’s best you pre-treat the stain or apply a detergent solution suitable for the type of stain, directly on the stained area before washing your clothes.

  • SHRINKAGE: Heat and agitation are the most common reasons for shrinkage. Your laundry method and the type of fabric can result in clothing shrinkage. To avoid this problem, hand-wash,  hang, or air dry your clothes that have the possibility of shrinking. A bonus would be reading the labels when purchasing or before washing.

  • PILLING AND SHEDDING: Some fabrics do have a  have a natural tendency to shed and pill especially synthetic texture fabrics. In order to avoid or minimize this problem, it is best to regulate the washing machine cycle to gentle wash and avoid using extremely hot water, or better still avoid using the washing machine altogether and wash by hand as it’s safer and mostly gentler that way. Moreover, turning your fabric inside out before washing will help eliminate excess pilling.

When drying, you should either air-dry on a line or lay flat on a surface instead of using the machine dryer, especially with knitwear.
