Being invited to a wedding is an honour and a privilege- it means that the happy couple wants to include you in their special day. It can also be nerve-wracking to remember how to be the perfect wedding guest. Follow these 10 simple tips and you won’t have anything to worry about. 

  • RSVP ASAP
  • Read the invitation carefully
  • Buy appropriate attire
  • Be punctual 
  • Mingle
  • Be aware of your phone 
  • Don’t block the camera
  • Be mindful of the newlyweds

RSVP ASAP

Being the perfect wedding guest starts before the actual wedding. When you receive your RSVP, respond as soon as possible. It’s best to let the wedding party know as soon as you can whether you can make the ceremony or not so that they can finalise the number of guests that will be attending and let their vendors know. You may think that your RSVP is insignificant, but it is not. As soon as you receive your invitation, check your calendar, and make a decision.

Read the invitation carefully

Once you have decided to attend the wedding, make sure that you read the full invitation and read it carefully. All of the relevant information you will need to know, such as the dress code, wedding venue, whether you have a plus one, etc. will be on the invitation, and you don’t want to miss a crucial detail.

Buy appropriate attire 

Deciding on an outfit for a wedding can be incredibly stressful. Unless stated otherwise, the wedding dress code is usually black tie. Suits, dresses, skirts, and jumpsuits are all appropriate forms of wedding attire, just remember to NEVER wear white. Try and wear something that reflects the season the wedding is being held in. For example, for a summer wedding you may want to wear something floral. If you have any reservations about what to wear, ask around. Consult with friends and family who will give you a heads up if your outfit is inappropriate for the occasion.

Be punctual

When the day of the wedding arrives it’s important to be punctual. You don’t want to be hunched over, waving apologetically, as you stumble behind the bride as she walks down the aisle. Instead, arrive with plenty of time to mingle beforehand, find yourself a seat, and fully settle before the ceremony begins. This will make your experience a lot more relaxing and enjoyable, and avoid any unwanted attention or awkwardness.

Mingle

Weddings are a great place to socialise. Whether you talk to friends and family you haven’t had a chance to catch up with in years, or you find yourself meeting new people, it’s important to mingle with the other guests in attendance. Every wedding should have a bright and fun atmosphere, and that will only be achieved through wedding guest mingling.

Be aware of your phone

Before heading into the wedding ceremony it’s important to either put your phone on silent or completely turn it off. You don’t want to cause any disruptions with an unwarranted phone call or text message. Once you are at the reception, it is fine to check your phone, but be wary of how much. You want to experience the day and be there for the happy couple, so don’t spend all of your time checking your phone.

Don’t block the camera

There will undoubtedly be many people looking to get a shot of the happy couple, including professional photographers hired for the event. Whilst you may be asked to be part of a few photos, be mindful of where the cameras are at all times. You don’t want to be the person who has ruined the happiest day of a couples life by photobombing.

Be mindful of the newlyweds

Getting married is fun and exciting, but it can also be incredibly stressful. Between mingling with guests, giving speeches, and enjoying their first dance, they aren’t given a lot of time to themselves. As a wedding guest, you don’t want to add any unnecessary stress onto the newlyweds day. You may be excited to congratulate them and wish them all the best, but don’t crowd them or take up too much of their time. You aren’t the only one there to celebrate their big day.

Keep your wedding dress clean on your big day

If you’re getting married, firstly, congratulations, I sincerely hope that you have a long and happy marriage. Secondly, have you thought about how you’re going to keep your wedding dress clean on your big day? If not, here are some tips for you. 

  • Air your dress
  • Use stain protector on the hem of your dress
  • Put your dress on at the last minute
  • Step into your dress
  • Take a water spray bottle with you
  • Keep white chalk on hand
  • Recruit your bridal party to help 
  • Have an emergency kit on hand
  • Never rub a stain 
  • Have a post-wedding plan

Air your dress

On the morning of your wedding day, hang your dress somewhere out of the way from yourself and your bridal party. It is essential that you air out your wedding dress so that you can let any wrinkles fall. That being said, you don’t want it to be hung somewhere that risks it being stained. If possible, leave it in an empty bedroom, so it won’t be disturbed until the moment you put it on.

Use stain protector on the hem of your dress 

If you are wearing a floor-length wedding dress, it’s essential that you protect the hem of your gown. Even if you aren’t planning on wandering outside, your hem will be dragging across the floor all day and will become dirty if not protected. Buy a stain protector for the hem of your dress, but, be very careful when applying it. If you apply too much stain protector you may leave a stain, so apply only a small amount.

Put your dress on at the last minute 

Let your dress be the final step in your getting ready journey. This will limit the risk of makeup or hairspray stains ruining your wedding dress.

Step into your dress

When you are putting on your dress, it’s best to step into it so that it does not come into contact with your hair or makeup- this is to protect both the dress and your perfectly finessed hair and makeup. Finally, have your bridesmaids help you put your shoes on to avoid bending down and wrinkling your dress.

Take a water spray bottle with you 

You don’t want your dress to look wrinkled in your wedding photos. To avoid this, have a spray water bottle with you at all times. If you spot a small wrinkle on your dress, simply spray a small amount of the water on to it, and said wrinkle will disappear. Be warned, water will not work on larger wrinkles.

Keep white chalk on hand 

As your wedding day progresses, there is an increased chance of your dress becoming stained. Chalk is a great way to get rid of oil-based stains, and, if your wedding dress is white, white chalk will help cover the stain. If you have an oil-based stain, simply rub a small amount of the chalk over the stain, and wait 15 minutes for the chalk to absorb the oil. After 15 minutes, brush the chalk off of your wedding dress, and continue with what will be one of the best days of your life.

Recruit your bridal party to help 

Your bridal party is there to help, so use them to help you keep your wedding dress clean. Have two of them help you hold up your dress when you are walking over a particularly dirty section of flooring. Tell them to watch out for any stains that may drip onto your dress, and make sure that they know how to remove stains as fast as possible. Remember, it’s your day, and if you want your bridal party to help you keep your dress clean, then so be it.

Have an emergency kit on hand

You can buy an emergency kit or make one yourself, either way, they are essential to have on your wedding day. Your emergency kit will have everything you will need for any wedding dress disaster. From a needle and thread to deal with rips in your dress to emergency crystals, your emergency kit will help with any wedding dress mishap.

Never rub a stain 

If you do get a stain on your wedding dress, and the chalk has not helped, do not rub it. Rubbing a stain will only set it further into your dress and may hinder it from being removed after your wedding day. Instead, try and cover the stain with alternative embellishments, such as flowers or crystals, or just own the fact that your dress is stained. It will come out eventually. There is no need to let a little stain ruin your big day.

Have a post-wedding plan

It’s important to have a plan for how you are going to clean your wedding dress after your wedding. Do you want it cleaned professionally by a dry cleaner? Be organised 

When planning a wedding there is a lot of things to think about. From choosing a venue to considering what floral arrangements you want, you have to consider the smallest of details. To ensure that you achieve your perfect day, it’s best to organise your ideas as soon as possible. Create mood boards for the different aspects of your wedding to narrow down your initial ideas. Create a check-list of things that need to be completed before your big day. Split your to-do list up into monthly tasks to make the list more manageable, setting yourself goals on what you want to achieve leading up to your special day. Preparation is key to achieving your perfect wedding, the more organised you are the easier it will be to achieve your perfect day.

Save a date

Given the current situation, it’s near impossible to pin down an exact date for your wedding. That being said, you can decide what season, and maybe even month, you would like to be married in. This will give you a realistic time-frame of when you need to start preparing for your big day.

Choose a colour scheme    

After you’ve established what season your wedding will take place in, it may be easier to choose a colour scheme. For example, a winter wedding could have a darker colour scheme than a summer wedding. Consider the colours that you and your significant other like. Are there any colours that you feel signify your relationship? After picking a colour scheme, you can begin planning floral arrangements, place settings, decorations- all of the smaller things that will bring your wedding together.

Create a guest list

Once you’ve decided on your venue and your wedding date, you can begin considering who will be on your guest list. Think about who you want as part of your bridal and groom squad and work from there. The more time you give yourself and your partner to consider the guest list the easier it will be to send out those final invitations without the fear of forgetting anyone. Buy your perfect outfit 

One of the most important parts of anyone’s big day is their outfit. You want to look perfect. Take your time looking for an outfit. Browse all your options and don’t rush into a decision. It doesn’t matter if you have to visit 10 shops, try on 100 different looks and order a couple of back-up options online. It’s your big day and you should feel comfortable in whatever you decide to wear. Don’t forget to consider your shoes and accessories as well.

Capture the moment 

Your wedding day is one of the biggest days of your life and you will want to remember every moment of it. That is why it’s so important to get a good photographer and/or videographer. Take your time to look through the portfolios of multiple photographers and videographers and pick one with your dream style. You can even reach out to a handful of them and ask for additional samples of their work. Your wedding photos and video will serve as a reminder of your big day for the rest of your life, so you want to hire the best person for the job. 

Don’t forget to have fun
