Refreshing wardrobe space

This month, ufurnish.com founder Deirdre Mc Gettrick is sharing her top tips on how to organise and arrange your wardrobe space for maximum benefits.

With the best will in the world our wardrobes can still end up looking like organised chaos. This makes it hard to find the pieces we love, can lead to damaged clothing and makes our overall lives feel that little bit disorganised. That’s why I’ve compiled my top tips to get control back on your wardrobe.

1. Embrace The Purge

The first thing I recommend is a good old fashioned clear out! Channel your inner Marie Kondo and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If not, bid it farewell with gratitude. If you find getting rid of things difficult then face all your hanging clothes the ‘wrong way around’, once you wear the item then face it the right way around. If after 6 months something is still facing the wrong way then you haven’t worn it and it may be time to say goodbye.

2. Categorisation Is Key

Now that you’ve trimmed the excess, it’s time to categorise like a pro. Divide your wardrobe into sections: tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, accessories, and shoes. Embrace the joy of grouping similar items together, creating harmony within your closet’s confines. Bonus points for color-coordinating each section, turning your wardrobe into a visual masterpiece! This neat layout will have you wanting to keep things tidy all year round.

3. Invest in Storage Solutions

From sleek drawers to stackable shelves, invest in tools that maximise vertical space and keep clutter at bay. Consider clear bins for seasonal items, under-bed storage for shoes and larger less worn items, and cascading hangers to optimise hanging space. With the right storage arsenal, even the tiniest of closets can store a great amount.

4. Add Personality

Refreshing your wardrobe space doesn’t have to be boring! Organisation can be stylish too. Add personality to your wardrobe with decorative elements such as a chic mirror to admire your lovely outfit changes, some fairy lights to add a sense of whimsy or scented sachets to keep your clothes smelling fresh.

5. Maintenance

Once you’ve achieved a state of total organisation in your wardrobe you think it’ll never get messy again but life gets in the way! But fear not, with some easy maintenance steps the space can be kept under control. Establish maintenance protocols akin to furniture care routines, conducting periodic assessments and adjustments. Regularly edit your wardrobe, ensuring that it remains a curated collection of essentials and treasures and a place that’s a joy to open and not a place that instills fear!
