Being a mother isn’t easy. Not only does your lifestyle changes but you also need to think about changing the nappy, get used to hearing baby cries, and (hopefully) gotten a decent night’s sleep (just kidding, kind of). But there is more. You also have to think about the laundry. Those adorable, yet oh-so-stainable, baby clothes also need caring. Dos

Wash Before Wear

Before your little one wears their cute outfits, it’s especially you give them a quick spin in the washing machine to remove any dust or lingering chemicals from the manufacturing process.

Read The Care Label

The general rule of laundry is to always read the care label. This rule is also an essentials do in keeping your baby’s clothes looking tip-top condition as those tiny symbols are a guide. Be on the look out for any temperature recommendations or washing instructions to prevent any shrinkage.

Separate Loads

For the best cleaning results, be sure to separate your baby clothes from other clothes to avoid mishaps in transferring stains or colours. Nobody wants to see a tomato sauce or other stains on a baby’s clothes!

Pre-treat stains

While bibs usually prevent stains landing on clothes, it doesn’t mean clothes will always be stain-free. Babies are known to make a mess when it comes to eating. Think of the milk spillages, baby food jar stains etc. To tackle these, pre-treating a major do in washing baby clothes. The quicker you tackle a stain and scrape off any excess, the easier it is to remove.

Don’ts

Overfill The Machine

We understand the temptation to cram everything into the washer, especially clothes as tiny as baby clothes. However, overfilling the machine leads to poor cleaning results and lingering stains. Ideally, leave enough space for everything to tumble freely.

Use Harsh Detergents

Baby clothes are delicate and their skin is quite sensitive so don’t use harsh detergents. Instaed, use gentle laundry detergents that are created for the little ones.

Forget The Mesh Laundry Bag

Baby clothes are tiny and they do have a tendency to get lost into the laundry abyss. To save yourself a franctic search, consider throwing them in a mesh laundry bag before washing.

Panic!

With laundry, mistakes are common. Baby clothes might seem easy to wash but if you see a stain, don’t panic. Instead, act quickly, treat stains accordingly. Remember, a little mess or stain doesn’t mean the end of the world (or for the outfit!)

Bonus Tip: Make sure you have enough bibs and burp cloths! They’ll be your first line of defence against unwanted stains, saving your little one’s outfits (and your sanity) from constant wash cycles.

With these dos and don’ts of washing baby clothes, you’ll no doubt be better prepared to tackle any stains that you will see.
