Summer Laundry Tips You Should Use

With the hotter weather, we are more prone to sweating, so we must continue to take care of our clothes.

Here are 5 Summer Laundry Tips you should use!

1. Hang Your Clothes Outside

The first summer laundry tip is to make full use of your garden clothesline this summer.

Hang your clothes outside in the hot weather and let the natural sunlight do its magic on your clothes. Hanging your clothes outside is proven to get rid of bad odours and your clothes will smell fresh afterwards!

Summer Laundry Tips - hang clothes outside

2. Regular Clean Checks For Your Clothesline

We recommend always double-checking that your clothesline is clean. Summer is a great season, but it also invites all the insects and birds to your garden so if you spot any mess on your clothing line, clean it before hanging your clothes.

Summer Laundry Tips - keep clothesline clean

3. Teach The Kids About Laundry

Summer is a time when kids have fun and play with their friends. However, laundry is an important life skill and in the 6 weeks of the summer holiday break, find time to slowly introduce your kids to laundry. Start giving them small tasks such as folding clothes or organising the pegs. They’ll no doubt run to the door once they hear the ice cream van but teaching them slowly will get them into the habit of organisation.

4. Read Instructions on Labels and Detergents Carefully

This summer laundry tip may sound obvious but never underestimate summer fabrics. Always read the labels on your clothes carefully.

Certain clothes or fabrics such as silk and cotton will need to be washed differently due to the hot weather. Silk is a very delicate fabric that requires careful attention. Ensure temperatures don’t go above 30 degrees. Whereas cotton fabric can be managed to be in the washer at a hotter temperature of 90 degrees.

The same goes for choosing the right detergent. Summer clothes, as explained, as made from different materials and fabrics from winter clothes. To avoid ruining your clothes, our tip for you is to read the labels on your detergent to make sure it’s suited for delicate clothes.

We recommend using a gentle detergent for the best results and keeping your summer clothes in good condition!

5. Take Care of Your Swimwear

Whether it’s at the swimming pool or at the beach, people love swimming in the summer. You’ll want to make sure your swimwear is in good condition after you’ve finished swimming.

Before you put your swimwear away in the wash, always handwash them to ensure the sand isn’t in the machine. After you’ve hand-washed, put them in the washing machine and set the settings to 30 degrees. Once the cycle is over, the strong smell of chlorine will go away, and you’ll have freshly delicate-looking swimwear again!

How To Tie A Headscarf

The Headscarf has a storied history dating back to Ancient Rome and the Middle East. Today, the headscarf is still important to religious groups and the fashion industry. if you’re interested in wearing one, we will walk you through how to tie a headscarf!

First things first, before learning to tie a headscarf, we recommend the square headscarves as they’re beginner-friendly and there is a lot more you can do with them, stylistically.

Here are three popular headscarves and the steps to tie them below.

  • Rosette Wrap
  • Boho Headscarf
  • Babushka

Rosette Wrap

One popular headscarf style is the Rosette Wrap.

To tie your headscarf using this style:

  1. Tie your hair so it becomes a ponytail.
  2. Fold the scarf and create a triangle.
  3. After you’ve folded your scarf, put the ends of the scarf to the front of your forehead.
  4. Twists the ends together leading into a spiral
  5. Lastly, tuck the ends in to secure the scarf.

Boho Headscarf

The boho headscarf is suited for the hot weather and will cover (no pun intended) the summer look essentials! To get started:

  1. Fold your scarf in half to form a triangle.
  2. Wrap it around your forehead and tie the knot in the back.
  3. The corner of your scarf should be hanging down in the back.
  4. Make sure it is tight and comfortable as you tie the headscarf!

Babushka Headscarf

It’s easy to fall in love with the classic Babushka style and get inspired to tie a headscarf. This style is typically worn over the hair and tied below the chin.

What makes this headscarf style cool is that it will keep your hair in place! Whether you’re rushing to open the front door or going out in the rain or wind, the Babushka will cover your hair!

To tie this headscarf:

  1. Start by folding it in half to make a triangle.
  2. Simply place the folded edge on the top of your head (it needs to be centred).
  3. Take the two opposing ends and knot them under your chin. It’s as easy as 123!

Considering headscarves are fabric, take good care of them and be sure to check if they’re suited to be dry cleaned!

If you need your headscarves to be dry cleaned and look sharp, head over to the Laundryheap website to book your dry cleaning today!

Celebrate Pride through clothing

Photo by Gotta Be Worth It from Pexels

Pride month is celebrated each year to honour the Stonewall Uprising which occurred in Manhattan in 1969. There are many ways to celebrate Pride month, and one of the easiest is through clothing. Show your support by following these simple clothing hacks.

  • Wear Pride colours
  • Follow the rainbow
  • Make a statement
  • Add some glitter
  • Buy from LGBTIQ+ stores
  • Or brands that support LGBTIQ+ organisations

Wear pride colours

Pride is a colourful celebration and there are many different flags that represent the different LGBTIQ+ groups. The traditional rainbow flag, consisting of the colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, was designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. He wanted to design a symbol for the movement that would last, and took inspiration from movements, such as the civil rights movement, to create something bold, bright, and timeless. Now, there are bisexual, pansexual, polysexual, lesbian, and asexual flags, just to name a few. Show your Pride support by wearing any of the colours, or all of them, of these flags.

Follow the rainbow

The rainbow has become synonymous with the LGBTIQ+ community because of its connection to their original flag, often named the rainbow flag. During Pride month it’s not unlikely to see clothing, shoes, and badges featuring the rainbow flag, in support of the celebrated month. Wear a rainbow throughout the month of June, no matter how small, to show your allyship to the LGBTIQ+ movement.

Make a statement

Pride month isn’t just about wearing bright colours and celebrating, it’s about making a statement and bringing attention to the LGBTIQ+ community. Another way to celebrate Pride via clothing is to wear a statement T-shirt or jumper. You can find many different slogans, from ‘Love is Love’, to ‘Trans Rights are Human Rights’, you simply have to search for the one that expresses most accurately what you want to say.

Add some glitter

Glitter is heavily tied to LGBTIQ+ culture, particularly the world of drag. You won’t be able to walk through a Pride parade without coming out COVERED in the stuff. Have no fear though, glitter is a fun addition to any Pride celebration outfit. Whether you wear it on your face, your outfit, or in your hair, glitter can elevate your look to the next level, whilst showing support for the LGBTIQ+ community.

Buy from LGBTIQ+ stores

One of the best ways to celebrate Pride month through clothing is by buying from LGBTIQ+ stores. Buying from an LBGTIQ+ store is a great way to support an independent business, and show your support and allyship to the community. In addition to this, many LGBTIQ+ businesses donate part of their profits to LGBTIQ+ charities and organsiations.

Or brands that support LGBTIQ+ organisations

You will notice around Pride month that many brands will use LGBTIQ+ colours and pledge support to the LGBTIQ+ community. Whilst this is useful at bringing attention to the community, it is not always done for the right reasons. Before buying from a company that is not run by members of the LGBTIQ+ community but pledges support to them, do a bit of research. Find out whether they truly are allys, or are simply using the month as a marketing ploy.

Tumble dryer care guide

Photo by Karolina Grabowska from Pexels

Tumble dryers are incredibly useful when you need to quickly dry your clothes. If not looked after properly, you will find that your tumble dryer may lose its ability to dry your clothes, or may even stop working completely. This care guide will help you look after your tumble dryer.

  • Clean the lint filter
  • Empty the water tank
  • Clear the vents
  • Clean the dryer drum
  • Un-clog the heat exchanger

Clean the lint filter

As your clothes are spun in your tumble dryer, they release particles of fibres and fluff. The lint filter in your tumble dryer prevents these particles from clogging the airflow of the vent system. It is important to clean your tumble dryers lint filter after every use. If you don’t you can restrict the flow of air through the dryer and prevent your clothes from being sufficiently dried.

To clean your lint filter remove it from the tumble dryer and use a vacuum hose to remove the loose particles. You can find your lint filter at the front of your tumble dryer, just under the rim of your dryer’s door. To remove the rest of the particles, wash your lint filter in warm soapy water.

You need to leave your lint filter to completely dry before putting it back in the tumble dryer. Whilst you are waiting for your filter to dry, use your vacuum hose to clear out the slot your lint filter sits in. This will help increase the airflow of your tumble dryer.

Once your lint filter is completely dry, slot it back into the dryer, and it will be ready to use.

Empty the water tank

A tumble dryer works by rotating your wet clothes and adding heat to them to remove the water. The water that is removed from your clothing is stored in the tumble dryers water tank. Depending on the model of your machine, the water tank will be stored at the top of your machine in a drawer or at the bottom. Despite the fact that your water tank can hold the excess water from 2 loads of laundry, it’s best to empty it after every use. To drain your water, simply remove the water tank, and pour the water down the sink. You may want to give your tank a quick rinse before re-inserting it into your machine.

Clear the vents

If you own a vented tumble dryer you must check the hose and vent of your machine.

The hose of your tumble dryer takes the warm, damp, air away from the drum, and helps circulate fresh air into your machine. You should give your hose enough space to lay straight, without any kinks. If your hose has a kink it can restrict airflow and increase the time it takes for your clothes to dry.

After checking the hose, check that your wall vent is clear of fluff and dust. If your vent is clogged it will restrict airflow and increase the amount of time it takes for your clothes to dry. To clear your vent you can use a vacuum hose to remove any loose fluff and dust. Once you have removed the loose debris, use a wet cloth to get rid of any remaining dust. This will leave your machine working at its maximum potential.

Clean the dryer drum

It is vital to clean the drum of your tumble dryer for two reasons. Firstly, grime and dust from your washing can linger in the drum and transfer onto other loads of laundry. Secondly, the drying sensor that monitors when your clothes are dry is located in the drum, but, if dirty, can lead to inaccurate drying times.

To clean the drum of your tumble dryer, use a clean cloth and white vinegar to rub the drum of your dryer. Ideally, this should be done after every load, or at least after every two loads.

Unclog the heat exchanger

The heat exchanger in your tumble dryer turns steam from the drum back into water. Amongst the steam and air that passes through the exchanger are fibres from your clothing. Overtime these fibres build-up, which can result in a clogged heat exchanger. When your exchanger becomes clogged, it slows the flow of air through your machine, and prevents your clothes from drying.

To unclog your heat exchanger, use your hand to remove the larger lumps of fluff. Once you’ve removed the larger sections of fluff, rinse the rest of the exchanger under the tap. Leave it to completely dry before placing back into the machine.

Whilst your cleaning your tumble dryer, let us dry your clothes for you. You can book your Laundryheap service by heading to the Laundryheap website or by downloading the free Laundryheap app.

Top ten wardrobe organisation tips

Photo by Victoria Borodinova from Pexels

Regardless of the size and shape of your wardrobe, there never seems to be enough room to tidily fit all of your clothes. These top ten wardrobe organisation tips will help you de-clutter and re-organise your wardrobe for optimum space and an aesthetically pleasing look.

  • Have a clear-out
  • Change your wardrobe with the seasons
  • Deep clean your wardrobe
  • Hang your clothes by category
  • Colour code your clothing
  • Use coordinating hangers
  • Utilise shelving space
  • Use storage boxes
  • Maximise vertical storage space
  • Utilise empty wall space

Have a clear-out

If your wardrobe is looking cluttered and disorganised the first thing to do is have a clear out. Take everything out- clothes, shoes, accessories, bags, and anything else you may have in there, and lay it all out on your bed. Sift through your items and throw out anything that you don’t want or need anymore.

TOP TIP: If you’re finding it difficult to throw items away think about when the last time you have wore or used the item was. If it wasn’t in the last 6-12 months, and the item has no sentimental value, then throw it away.

Rather than discarding your clothes in the bin, donate them to a local charity shop or clothing donation bin. If you no longer need the clothing for yourself, why not give it to someone less fortunate.

De-cluttering your wardrobe of items you no longer wear or use will leave you with a much clearer wardrobe that is easier to navigate and more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Change your wardrobe with the seasons

Your winter and autumn wardrobe will contain bulkier clothing, such as jumpers, whereas your summer and spring wardrobe will consist of thinner materials. The best way to utilise the space in your wardrobe is by alternating your clothing with the seasons. This means that you will have plenty of space in the autumn and winter for your bulkier clothing, and room to spare in the summer and spring with the absence of unnecessary items. Make sure that you store your clothing away properly to avoid ruining them.

Deep clean your wardrobe

Every 3 months take everything out of your wardrobe and give it a deep clean. Wipe down all the walls and doors, hoover the bottom of it to get rid of any dust, and spray the inside of it with room spray. Not only will this leave your wardrobe gleaming from the outside, but it will also prevent your clothing from becoming unnecessarily dusty from being left in a dirty wardrobe.

Hang your clothes by category

We’ve all been in that situation where you’re running late for something and can’t seem to find the right thing to wear. Endlessly flicking through your clothes, trying desperately to find something appropriate. Make it easier to find your perfect outfit by organising your clothes by category. Keep all of your trousers, shirts, jackets, etc. together. This will make it easier to see what clothes you have available to you and also make clothing combinations easier to figure out.

Colour code your clothing

If you want to go one step further from hanging your clothes by category, you may also want to hang your clothes by colour. If you are a particularly visual person, you may find it easier to pick your outfits by sourcing what particular items you want to wear by their colour. Not to mention, this will look incredibly visually effective when you open your wardrobe.

Use coordinating hangers

If you want to make your wardrobe look organised use the same coloured and sized hangers. Nothing screams wardrobe chaos more than clothes hung on an abundance of different sized and coloured hangers. Using the same hangers will make your wardrobe look more uniform and therefore more organised.

Utilise shelving space

If you have shelves in your wardrobe, or the space to install shelves, utilise that space. Use your shelves to stack heavy and bulky items that take up space in your wardrobe, but won’t lose their shape if folded and stacked. Stack jumpers, denim items and anything else that may take up a lot of wardrobe space.

Use storage boxes

If you have space in your wardrobe for storage boxes use that space. Use storage boxes to store everyday t-shirts, pyjamas, and work out outfits. These items are less likely to lose shape and become overly wrinkled, and will also save an abundance of room for other clothes to be hung up. Additionally, because these items tend to be made from thinner material you can store more items in a smaller space.

Maximise vertical storage space

No matter the size and shape of your wardrobe, you will always have vertical space that you can utilise. If you don’t have any space to store your shoes, why not get a hanging shoe rack to put over your wardrobe doors. Alternatively, you can buy specialised hangers to hang accessories, belts, and scarves from. This can save on using individual hangers for individual scarves etc. Whatever vertical storage you have, make sure to utilise it as best as you can.

Utilise empty wall space

Not all clothing items need to be put in your wardrobe. If you own many scarves and belts, utilise your empty wall space and hang your accessories on the wall. You can do so by either using nails or investing in a wall holder. This will de-clutter your wardrobe of unnecessary accessories and make it easier for you to choose your accessory for the day.

Spring Fashion 2020

It’s time to pack away the jumpers and make room for clothing of a lighter kind as we welcome spring 2020 to our wardrobes. This new season brings with it the possibility of a brand new wardrobe of vibrant colours and lighter fabrics. Here’s what you can expect from spring fashion 2020.

  • A new look for leather

The disco collar

We’re heading back to the ’70s this spring with the disco collar. This pronounced collar will be seen on coats, jackets, and shirts both on and off the dancefloor. If you’re feeling brave, choose a collar in a contrasting colour, guaranteed to leave you with that Saturday night fever.

Shorts of all lengths

Short shorts are making a return this season, so bring your legs out of hiding and show them off to the world. Pair your shorts with a long-sleeved top or light jacket, and finish off the look with knee-high boots to stop your legs from getting cold during those April showers.

If short shorts aren’t for you, Bermuda shorts are the way forward. Jazz up your usual office attire with a classy Bermuda short suit- perfect for keeping cool in the office.

Highlighter colours

We’ve been back to the ’70s, but now we’re re-winding to the ’80s for the return of neon. This spring, highlighter neons will be bringing us sunshine on even the cloudiest of days. To tone down your look, pair your neons with black, white and tan items of clothing. Alternatively, if you aren’t quite ready to embrace the colour intensity, add some neon to your wardrobe with a subtle accessory.

The return of the waistcoat

Back in 2005, supermodel Kate Moss made waistcoats a fashion staple when she paired hers with a pair of denim shorts at Glastonbury. Now, the waistcoat is making its return. Whether you want to wear it on its own, with a flowing shirt or as part of a three-piece-suite, this fashion classic will definitely be found somewhere in your wardrobe this spring.
