Does Baking Soda Fade Colours?

Baking soda is popular due to its ability to tackle tougher stains regardless if it’s a sofa or a garment. With its many benefits to your laundry routine, it’s no surprise that it is a great alternative to fabric softener. But does baking soda fade colours?

While baking soda can undeniably be a benefit to your laundry due to its natural antiseptic properties, you should still use it with caution due to its high pH level that can fade colours on clothes.

Delicate fabrics such as wool, cashmere and silk are sensitive to the pH level so using too much baking soda can cause colours to fade and in turn, makes removing stubborn stains like coffee more difficult.

In addition, over-using baking soda can cause fabrics like wool and fabrics to go coarse. To keep it safe, use white vinegar to prevent colours from fading and fabrics from getting coarse.

We recommend using baking soda to a minimum when it comes to treating stains on fabrics. Next time your delicate fabrics are stained, mix baking soda with water to treat the stains.

Baking soda is a great product and is generally safe to use in the laundry. When used in moderation and with care, it will not cause colours to fade but always be cautious when using it on delicate fabrics.

The Guide To Wash Your Shower Curtains

Your shower curtain is a great bathroom accessory, but it also is prone to water, soap stains and mould. This means you need to wash your shower curtains regularly to preserve their life span and material.

In this guide, we are going to go through the essential information on washing your shower curtains.

How Often Should You Wash Your Shower Curtains?

A common mistake people make is that they think once their shower curtains get dirty, it needs to be replaced. However, this isn’t the case because shower curtains can be washed and re-used. This saves you money in the process.

A general rule of thumb is to wash your shower curtains every month. It’s important to consistently wash them monthly because they do generate bacteria and it also means you are getting rid of the mould that damages the fabric over time.

How to Wash Your Shower Curtains Using The Washing Machine?

The good thing about washing your shower curtains is that it doesn’t take much time but it does require a little more care than a normal laundry chore.

Firstly, take down the shower curtain and remove any rings. Then place the curtain in the washing machine. It is recommended to put a few white towels into the load for better cleaning results as this will provide extra scrubbing.

Moreover, add the normal amount of laundry detergent and a ½ cup of baking soda. Once that is done, put the machine in a gentle and warm setting if you have a plastic curtain and run the cycle for 30 minutes.

If you have a fabric shower curtain, set it with the highest cycle of 40 to 60 degrees but as always, read the label for care instructions.

When your washing machine starts to reach the rinse cycle, at a ½ to 1 cup of white vinegar.

Lastly, when the cycle finishes, hang your shower curtain up to dry.

How to Wash Your Shower Curtains By Hand?

Sometimes your shower curtains don’t need washing machine attention and the good news is that handwashing is also effective in washing your shower curtains.

To begin handwashing, remove the shower curtain for better handling. Make sure the curtain is a little wet and then pour some baking soda on it to scrub any mould, dirt, water, or soap stains. We recommend using a brush or a cloth to rub the baking soda into the shower curtain.

Afterwards, turn on your tap to warm water settings and begin to rinse to remove any remaining stains. If you feel happy with the results, hang it up to dry.

Everybody wants their bathroom to look spotless. Make sure you add your shower curtains to laundry and cleaning duties. If you find yourself too busy or unsure about the instructions, book with Laundryheap so we can wash your shower curtains for you!

How To Remove Stains With Baking Soda

Baking soda is gentle enough to be used on any fabric. If you weren’t aware already, Baking soda acts as a natural bleach, cleanser, deodoriser, fabric softener and is great at tackling tough stains.

Pre-Soak with Baking Soda

To pre-soak your clothes before washing, fill up a bucket of water and add a cup of baking soda. Add your clothes into the bucket, swirl them around and leave to sit for a few hours to overnight. Although not a ‘stain’, pre-soaking helps to eliminate musty smells.

Pre-Treat with Baking Soda

There are two ways to remove stains with Baking via pre-treating. You can either sprinkle baking soda directly onto it or create a paste by mixing it with a 2:1 ratio of baking soda and water.

  • Grease stains- apply baking soda onto stain and leave for 30 mins to 1 hour.
  • Sweat stains- rub paste on stained area and let sit for a few mins.
  • Blood stains- rub paste on stained area and let sit for a 1 hour.
  • Vomit stains- apply baking soda directly onto stain and leave for 1 hour.
  • Fruit juice stains- apply baking soda onto stain, leave to sit, then rinse from the back of the stain.

If the stain is dry, use the paste method, but if it is wet, sprinkle baking soda on it.

Add Baking Soda In The Wash

You can add 1/2 a cup of baking soda directly into the wash, along with your clothes and detergent, or you can add 1/2 cup to the rinse cycle. Adding a cup of white vinegar will enhance baking soda effects.

For a more professional approach in removing stains and keeping your clothes fresh, you can count on Laundryheap to get the job done.

5 Benefits of Adding Baking Soda to Your Laundry Routine

Just like distilled white vinegar, baking soda has a lot of cleaning benefits, especially for your clothes!

Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) is a mild alkaline powder that raises the pH balance of water when mixed in with it. It acts as a natural cleanser, deodoriser and is also a mild antiseptic.

Here are 5 Benefits of Adding Baking Soda To Your Laundry Routine:

Brightens Clothes

Baking soda contains natural antiseptic properties which helps remove dinginess that remains on clothes overtime. By adding 1/2  a cup of Baking Soda to your regular wash (with laundry detergent) in the dispenser, your clothes will come out brighter!

Laundry Detergent Booster

When you add baking soda to your laundry, it helps boosts your laundry detergents performance as well as soften hard water that creates the dinginess. This will result in  fresher, and softer clothes. You’ll also be able to use less laundry detergent too.

Removes Odours

Baking soda works well in neutralising odours, even in the air; so it will work wonders in your wash! If you have clothes that are really smelly, you can pre-soak your clothes in 1-2 cups of baking soda mixed with warm water overnight before washing as normal.

Natural Fabric Softener

If you want softer clothes without using fabric softener, baking soda is a great alternative! Since it helps to regulate the pH balance of water, it also suspends detergent and mineral residue that causes your clothes to feel rough. Baking soda is also great for people with sensitive skin as it is a natural mineral. Just add 1/2 a cup in the drawer on the final rinse.

Removes Stains

Baking soda is a natural stain remover and is great for removing tough stains like oil, grease and food. All you need to do is create a baking soda paste with water, apply to the stain lightly rubbing it in and let it sit. Depending on how tough the stain is, you can let the paste sit for up to 15 mins or leave it over night.

If you’d like a more professional approach for keeping your clothes fresh and bright, you can count on Laundryheap to the job, all year round!
